SatanismThe most common challenge to the works is that of Satanism. Almost certainly due to their fantastic setting and use of very dark imagery to represent evil in the world, this is perceived as the work of satan by some. This is the reason cited for the inclusion of The Lord of The Rings at the Alamagordo, NM book burning of 2001.

SyncretismAnother reason that some seem to get upset with the work is the lesser known sin of syncretism. By attempting to blend some aspects of his Christian ideals with elements of Norse and other Pagan stories (even in a work of fiction) some feel this is almost as bad as the "satanic aspects".
